About the Avaluator.
In my view, ANYTHING that gets folk to think a bit and to err on the side of caution is probably a good product. Probably the only thing that may hold back this particular tool, is getting into enough hands early enough.
When avalanche problems arise, it's never the avalanche, it's the people. I know, because only last season I skied a passage and on completing it, looked up and realised how stupid I'd been.
Perhaps the one good aspect of this dismal affair was that at least it didn't become a positive reinforcement. That's another problem - 95% of the time snow is safe anyway, so every time you get away with it, you're at risk of thinking you're pretty smart. When you aren't.
