Hello from Dallas, Texas. Thanks for posting your experiences with your composter. I just bought the same one about a month ago, and its still in the mixing phase. I have yet to transfer it, but soon! I'm finding that it takes a lot of compost to fill up since most of it evaporates! THe smell has gotten better as more of it gets mixed in and it smells like coffee brewing now. It still makes a loud popping sound, which I hear is normal, so we'll see. I got sawdust at the local hardware store. The employees thought I was crazy, as they had to dig it out of their trash to give it to me. I'll be checking your blog from time to time to see how your experience goes!

    About the Avaluator.

In my view, ANYTHING that gets folk to think a bit and to err on the side of caution is probably a good product. Probably the only thing that may hold back this particular tool, is getting into enough hands early enough.

When avalanche problems arise, it's never the avalanche, it's the people. I know, because only last season I skied a passage and on completing it, looked up and realised how stupid I'd been.

Perhaps the one good aspect of this dismal affair was that at least it didn't become a positive reinforcement. That's another problem - 95% of the time snow is safe anyway, so every time you get away with it, you're at risk of thinking you're pretty smart. When you aren't.

Thanks for your comment - My first 'real' one I think !

I've started to experiment with different types of "saw dust" and have just done a batch with some wood chippings that were produced from some pruning we had done in the Winter. The result is encouraging as the small is more acceptable then the pet bedding sawdust that I had been using. Full post to follow.

Thanks for posting your experiences with your composter. I just bought the same one a few weeks ago, and its still mixing compost. I agree with the smell, its really bad every time you open it, it smells like vomit. We're going to try to plug in an air freshner and see if that helps. If not, we may have to move it somewhere, as I don't want to have to keep adding the baking soda all the time. Keep posting your experience with it, and also if you see how its helped your garden.

Absolutely. Targets on their own have limited value, especially if not carefully selected, and as you say, can lead to negative self-talk when not achieved.

More to follow on this I think.

    Hi David,
Your observations on intermediate goals and their efficacy.

Of particular interest were you comments on Justin Rose's views about wanting to win but not distressing himself if he didn't.

Good quality goal setting will help sustained motivation, and this is one of the key reasons for top sports people to use it.

A down side is that if the quality of the goal setting is not high, then it is possible for it to have the opposite effect.

It's important I feel, to stress the difference between the goal setting *process*, and merely setting "targets".

The really key element about goal setting is the process of it, not just the goal that one ends up with.

Additionally, the type of goal needs to be carefully considered. Outcome goals are usually, and certainly for recreational skiers, useless and fraught with potential for self-destructive self-talk.

Far better, is to learn how to develop process goals and concentration upon them. One of Britain's top Judo sportswomen - an Olympic Gold Medallist - said that she never considers what the outcome of her bouts might be: instead she just concentrates on what she had to *do*.
